Treatments For Pituitary Gland Cancers Or Tumors
Treatments for pituitary gland tumors or cancers may include hypophysectomy or craniotomy surgery, radiation therapy, drug or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).Active Surveillance Treatment
Active surveillance is a treatment option for some who have symptomless tumors in the pituitary gland. This watchful waiting method of treatment involves closely monitoring the patient and running tests.
With active surveillance treatment for the pituitary gland tumor would usually begin when the tumor starts causing symptoms.
Hypophysectomy Surgery. Removal Of The Tumor
Hypophysectomy, or removal of the tumor or cancer through the nasal cavity is the most common method of tumor removal treatment with 95 percent of pituitary gland tumor removals going through the sinus passage.
The other 5 percent of pituitary gland removal treatments are done through opening up the skull which is called a craniotomy.
Hormone Replacement Therapy For Underactive Glands
Hormone therapy treatments may be used after the hypophysectomy or craniotomy procedure if the pituitary gland becomes underactive and a hormone deficiency occurs.
