Diagnosing pituitary gland tumors or cancers may be difficult as the tumor may or may not have symptoms, so often they are not even found or diagnosed.

In the event a tumor is found during a diagnosis, or suspected a number of tests may be performed. The tests performed during a diagnosis may include bloodwork and urine tests, imaging tests such as a computerized tomography or CT scan, or an MRI or magnetic resonance brain scan.

Vision tests may also be performed during a diagnosis as pituitary gland tumors can push against the optical nerves and affect vision, especially peripheral vision.
